The Future as Mirror: How SF uses Tomorrow to Understand Today
Here's a video of a talk I gave at the Fractal conference in Medellin, Colombia in April 2011, describing the ways that, historically, science fiction stories have consciously and unconscously said as much about the times they were written in as they did about the futures they were set in. I think this says something about how we typically imagine the future.
My thanks to festival organizers Viviana Turjillo and Hernan Ortiz for inviting me to speak at Fractal and making it such a wonderful experience.
